Trebon is the historic town at the centre of the Trebonsko Lakes area, a UNESCO listed biosphere. The lakes are man-made fishponds created in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

Some sights of interest in Trebon

  • Trebon Castle - medieval and renaissance castle featuring the laboratory of alchemist John Dee
  • spas - the health-giving qualities of the area’s peat and water resulted in the creation of two major spa and health centres in Trebon. You can follow a day cycling with a massage. 
  • walks around the area - there are a number of well-signposted trails in the area. We recommend the trail around the Svet  and as “Svet” means “world” in Czech you can honestly tell your friends you’ve walked around the world
  • the pond/landscape centre - exhibitions about the history, management and natural history of the ponds
  • picturesque historic Trebon has a Gothic/Renaissance town centre,
  • the carp harvest - an incredible event which takes place in Autumn
  • Anifest - international animation festival
  • Trebon is on the international Prague-Vienna Greenways Cycle trail.

The surrounding area

  • the Velky and Maly Tisy ponds are renowned for their birdlife, including the spectacular white-tailed eagle (central picture above), penduline tit, bluethroat and many types of waterfowl can be seen
  • the Cerveny Blata bogwalk - a boarded walkway which takes you into the centre of the bog to view its plants and animals
  • Jindrichuv Hradec on the edge of the lakelands has a huge medieval castle, the National Museum of Photography, lovely gothic churches and town centre
  • the flat landscape around Trebon is easy cycling and walking country
  • Cesky Krumlov - uniquely well-preserved town centre (UNESCO world heritage site) with over 300 listed buildings and massive castle
  • Ceske Budejovice - a fascinating city, with historic medieval centre, Budweiser Budvar brewery, great shopping and eating.

Getting to the Trebon

If you want to hire a car, please use the car-rental search engine on the travel page to get the best deal for you. If you do not opt for hiring a car, your main option is to travel by train from Prague. The train journey takes 2hrs 30 mins, with a change at Veseli nad Luznice (the second train starts at Veseli nad Luznice and so is usually waiting for the Prague train).
