Czech Switzerland is a spectacular mountainous area in the north-west corner of the Czech Republic. It  extends eastward into the Lusatian Mountains and westward into the Ore Mountains. It is famous for its sandstone formations - the most popular being the Pravcicka Gate (photo left above). The area is particularly suited to walking and mountain-biking.

Some sights of interest in Czech Switzerland

  • Pravcicka Gate is the largest rock bridge in Europe.
  • Panska Skala is a spectacular geological feature similar to the Giant’s Causeway, with a cliff of polygonal basalt columns rising 12 metres above a lake.
  • Decin - the area’s nearest town sits on the River Elbe and has a castle with rosegarden.
  • the many walking trails in the area
  • Edmund and Wild Gorges - walk along the Kamenice River and then take a boat to enjoy spectacular scenery.

  • Sloup Rock Castle - a castle literally cut out of a huge rock

Getting to Czech Switzerland

The nearest airport is Dresden (Germany). If you wish to hire a car, please use the car rental search engine on the Travel Page to find the best deal for you. If you wish to use public transport - the direct train from Dresden to Decin takes only 45 minutes. There are also direct trains from Prague to Decin, which take twice as long.

Getting around Czech Switzerland

There are buses from Decin to many of the villages, including Hrensko from where you can walk to the Pravcicka Gate. Hiring a car will give you easier access to all parts of the area.
