Brno is the capital of Moravia and the second largest city in the Czech Republic. The city has plenty to offer the visitor. There are direct flights to Brno from the UK, and so it is the perfect place for a short city break or a base for exploring Moravia , Czech Canada and parts of the Bohemian/Moravian Highlands

  • Moravian Museum, Brno, - the archaeological galleries displays of the golden jewellery of the Great Moravian Empire and the Old Stone Age Venus statues are particularly worth seeing
  • the modernist architectural masterpiece Villa Tugendhat created by Mies van der Rohe in the 1920s
  • the Cappuccin Monastery with its mummified monks
  • the labyrinth of tunnels under the city
  • Slavnosti Vina - an annual wine festival for Moravian wine
  • Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul (photo left above) built during the 14th and 15th centuries
  • Spilberk Castle - which now houses the Brno Museum
  • Brno circuit - home of the Motorcycle Grand Prix Brno
  • the many music, theatre and arts events, especially the Brno International Music Festival
  • Ignis Brunensis - an international Fireworks Festival.

The surrounding area

  • Blansko Caves - five caves are open to the public out of the 110 in the Moravian Karst area.
  • Porta Coeli Monastery (see central photo) - founded in the 13th century, the monastery is famous for its Gothic doorway
  • Pernstejn Castle - one of the best preserved castles in the Czech Republic
  • the South Moravian vineyards and wines.
  • Slavkov/Austerlitz battlesite - where Napolean defeated the Russians and Austria armies
  • Trebic - UNESCO-listed Jewish quarter and St Procopius
  • Znojmo - a fascinating city with plenty of historic buildings, the most extensive underground labyrinth in the Czech Republic and excellent vintners.

Getting to Brno

  • Brno has its own airport -Brno Turany. Buses into the city centre depart every 15 minutes.
  • Brno is on the International train route, which means it has direct connections to Prague, Dresden, Berlin, Vienna, Budapest and Bratislava.
  • Brno is well-served by bus connections, with buses from Prague arriving approximately every half hour.
